Where was this found, did it get sold to a museum?

I believe that one was in fact sold to a museum. Most get sold to perfume manufacturers once people identify what they have.

How can I identify what I have as ambergris, or not?

The number one way is the smell. It should smell really good. The other is that it looks like a rock, but has a softer density. You should be able to scrape off a sample, look at it under a simple microscope and see that it is organic not mineral. To identify specifically as ambergris, you will either need a lab with a mass spectrometer or an expert on ambergris.
