Accidental Racism

These are collected from various websites including The Chive.  I want to explain that while they are funny, racism is not.  Accidental racism occurs, hopefully, because the ones that do it are unaware since they don’t think in terms of race.  If they are doing it because they really are racist, all the better to point it out.  Although I am caucasion (mixed from hundreds of races as most Americans are) of indeterminate origin (I have not looked myself up on Ancestry.com) I have experienced blatant racism while living in Hawaii.  My wife had a difficult time finding work because several employers told her they would not hire her because she was white.  (most businesses in Hawaii are asian held, the largest population is Japanese in origin)  At schools, they had ‘kill a haole day’.  Haole being roughly equivalent of the ‘n’ word, but for white people.  So, I know first hand how horrible racism is, not just as a concept.  With that preamble, hopefully this post will serve two purposes; 1) to be funny; and 2) to make all of us a bit more sensitive so we can avoid accidental racism.

  1. As a brown person myself who recently was upgraded to white by both White and African Americans who have told me several times to go back to where I came from ..even though I was just visiting I can tell you that the greater form of racism is used against brown people whether they will never admit to it.. They forgotten that our ancestors were too attacked..raped. ..robbed…mutilated…our villages burned to the ground and the only thing our amcestors got in return was infectious diseases. ..and we are not demonstrating every time someone discriminate against us or kill one of our own because quite frankly there is not as many of us left…..You often hear save the species of this or that .have you hear …please save the Natives. Many Hispanics migrate to North America trying to find a better life but more often than not all they find is hatred. ..

Unfortunately, humans seem bent on hating each other instead of loving each other. Anyone who is different can be attacked to make those the same feel superior and better. As a student of history, I don’t know a solution. There was a very effective and disturbing class that used to be taught about racism. It involved segregating people by their eye color. In just one hour the instructor could turn a group of normal people into haters and victims. I will have to look it up and post it. It shows the inherent flaw in all of us that we have to overcome.

  2. I love that you have experienced genuine racism as a white person (though admittedly probably not as extreme and as often as most people of other races) yet you haven’t let it turn you into one of those “Black ppl R racist 2!!! Why do we need Black history munth? WERE;S WHITE HISTORY MUNTH” people.
    Well done 🙂

It would be nice if we could have “history month” and reflect the accomplishments of everyone. I am glad when people can have history that relates to them as long as it is not to exclude others or to separate us into factions.
