Zombies, it seems, have turned the end of the world into a commercial opportunity for businesses ranging from auto customizers through ammunition suppliers. While many companies build products that look stout, there are no guarantees they’ll get the job done when the fertilizer really does hit the fan.
In all likelihood, the end of civilization won’t come at the hands of comic-book monsters. Instead, all it will take is a few simultaneous natural disasters, an EMP from a rogue nuke detonated in the atmosphere or a new strain of hemorrhagic fever, imported fresh from Central Africa to Manhattan. Someone once said we’re three missed meals away from anarchy, and we’re inclined to believe them.

If you believe that, too, you also know that the current “zombie survival” trucks on the market may protect you from an angry mob of the fictional undead, but they won’t help with a nuclear, biological or chemical emergency. Most will be rendered useless by an EMP, meaning that you’ll enjoy the end of the world from your driveway, not your mountain retreat.

Enter the SEMA 2012-displayed Survivor Truck, the brainchild of security consultant Jim DeLozier. While the converted Chevrolet C70 may look like just a tree-service truck on steroids, the build sheet tells a different story. DeLozier put some serious thought into this, and his truck is aimed at protecting occupants from real-world emergencies, not just fictional ones.

As PickupTrucks.com explains, the design features a Faraday cage (to shield  electronics from EMP), filters for nuclear, biological and chemical threats, a water desalinization system, water purification and multiple ways to generate electricity, including solar panels.

Its engine is designed to run on a variety of fuels, as is its primary generator. There’s ample storage, and by DeLozier’s calculations a family in a fully stocked Survivor Truck could live off the grid for up to two years. If dad has special forces training, that window could probably be pushed out even further.

To that end, the truck and its accessories are bulletproof, and it comes stocked with gas masks, chemical suits, night vision equipment and camouflage netting that provides 360-degrees of virtual invisibility around the truck. If you believe the best defense is a good offense, the roof is meant to serve as a sniper platform, though you need to provide your own Barrett .50 caliber.

Let us remind you that guaranteed survival comes at a high price, meant to discourage those looking for a mere weekend adventure vehicle. Supply your own platform and go light on the options, and a Survivor Truck will start at around $100,000. If you want the full-meal-deal, expect to pay as much as $600,000.

That may sound like a lot of money now, but when the lights go out and no one picks up when you dial 911, we suspect it will seem like a bargain.

Zombies to invade San Diego counter-terrorism summit!

More training for the Zombie Apocalypse – A few days ago I revealed the military was training for the zombie apocalypse, now the Counter-Terrorism Summit in San Diego will have a full simulation of the zombie apocalypse while trapped on an island resort.  Your tax dollars at work!  What do they know that we don’t?  Why can’t they just come to Phoenix ComicCon for the Zombie Walk and train here?  Perhaps the answers are too chilling to know…

When zombies and cops and Halloween – oh my — collide.

That’s the thrust of the so-called “zombie apocalypse” component of next month’s annual Counter-Terrorism Summit in San Diego, hosted by security firm HALO Corp. on a 44-acre island in the city’s Mission Bay section. Brad Barker, president of the California-based organization, said hosting the annual event over the Halloween weekend was too much temptation to resist.

“We’ve decided to throw a whimsical spin on a very well-respected training exercise,” Barker told FoxNews.com. “And in order to have an effective exercise, you have to have a crisis or a threat that makes everyone respond.”

“It’s going to be pretty scary looking.” – Brad Barker, HALO Corp.

In addition to mock terrorism scenarios featuring rural and urban environments, Barker said zombies worthy of Hollywood sets will recreate an emergency that will test how law enforcement officials and first-responders react to crises in real-time while sharing mission critical information.

“They’re going to look like the walking dead,” Barker said of the zombies. “It’s going to be pretty scary looking; this is going to be a real treat.”

The zombies, of course, won’t be real, but Barker said the same techniques, tactics and procedures that state and local authorities will glean from the exercise are very similar to the skills they’ll need when responding to an act of terrorism, natural disaster or pandemic.

“Whatever the catalyst is for a mass casualty event, nobody really cares,” Barker said. “What you’ve got is chaos, mass casualties and a whole lot of confusion. What we’re looking to do is to recreate the chaos.”

The zombie craze received a jolt last year when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention unveiled a public service campaign focusing the need to be prepared for major emergencies. Barker said his company just “couldn’t resist the opportunity” to play off of that.

Scheduled guests at the five-day event, which will run from Oct. 29 through Nov. 2, include Retired Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden, Mexico Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire Romero and Deputy Chief Michael Downing, commanding officer of the LAPD’s counter-terrorism unit.

Other events will include intelligence learned from attacks in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the 2008 bombing in Mumbai. But Barker said he expects the zombie recreation to leave attendees speechless.

“It’s going to be a significant event for us,” Barker said. “We’re just having a little bit of fun.”

US Military Training For Zombie Apocalypse

There are several Zombie Apocalypse Training Groups that have sprung up across the United States.  At first seen by many as cosplayers, survivalists or even kooks, they are now being employed by disaster preparedness agencies, cities, the Center for Disease Control and now the US Military.  Although these organizations embarrassingly admit they do not believe in zombies, they do believe that the same preparations will help those who face pandemics, break down of civil services, nuclear explosions, wars, terrorist strikes, earthquakes and other incidents in which public services break down and chaos ensues.  Here is one of the latest articles, reposted from The Huffington Post.  Please click on it as well to help Andy Campbell receive full credit and for more pictures.

Zombie Apocalypse Training: HALO Corp. To Train Military, Law Enforcement On Virus Outbreak

The Huffington Post  |  By  Posted: 09/17/2012 8:55 am Updated: 09/17/2012 5:55 pm

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is ready for a zombie apocalypse. Gun owners got prepared for a zombie apocalypse. Now, the military and law enforcement are getting ready.

And next month, they’ll begin training.

Security firm HALO Corp. announced yesterday that about 1,000 military personnel, police officials, medical experts and federal workers will learn the ins and outs of a zombie apocalypse, as part of an annual counter-terrorism summit , according to the Military Times.

Sure, the lesson is tongue-in-cheek — and only a small part of the summit’s more serious course load — but a zombie-like virus outbreak is a good training scenario. Visitors will learn to deal with a worldwide pandemic, where people become crazy, violent and fearful. Zombies will roam the summit grounds in San Diego, Calif. harassing troops and first-aid teams that will be participating.

Further details are unclear, but the Military Times made sure to note that zombies are not real.

The training comes at a time when the term “zombie apocalypse” is so viral that several branches of government have released statements on the matter. Earlier this month, the Department of Homeland Security reported that “the zombies are coming” as part of a hilarious bid to get citizens to prepare for a real disaster.

The CDC has released similar statements using zombies as a playful guise to get the public prepared for actual disasters. To assure that no one’s confused by these announcements, CDC told The Huffington Post that zombies are not real.

Zombie Apocalypse Protection Items

People across the world are preparing for the zombie apocalypse.  It might not be zombies, it might be world economic collapse, nuclear post holocaust, or pandemic disease, but it is basically protecting yourself from the infected and from your fellow humans who go bonkers when things fall apart.  Here are some of my favorites:
