Raising the Costa Concordia

Remember Raising the Titanic?  Now they are raising the Costa Concordia.  Remember the story from just under two ago when the Cruise Ship Captain was busy wining and dining and flirting with a woman in his cabin and wanted to show off by getting close to the shore?  He ended up crashing the ship into the rocky shallows off Italy.  Thirty people died and two more are missing and presumed dead.  3,229 passengers and 1,023 crew known to have been aboard at the time.

Today they are still trying to get the ship raised and upright so they can cut it apart for salvage and get it off the coast of Giglio Island.  Here are some photos.

  1. An amazing event! Costing circa $800,000,000 to upright and get to salvage, there apparently is sufficient value in the ship to recover costs.

Having read up on it, they don’t think it will have enough salvage value to pay for the costs, but they couldn’t leave it there. They had to pump off the fuel, but there is enough stuff inside that if it breaks up in the Mediterranean they say it would be an ecological disaster. Biologists say it has already killed off a lot of seagrass needed for the underwater preserve. I know if I lived on that resort island, looking out every day for two years on a rusted sunken cruise ship would sure drop my morale and my property values.
