Scientists create creepy lifelike faces with real human skin for robots

Future of robotics could include living skin for humanoid machines

By Kurt Knutsson, CyberGuy Report Fox News

Researchers from the University of Tokyo have developed a groundbreaking method to cover robotic surfaces with genuine, living skin tissue. The idea of robots with skin isn’t just about creating a more lifelike appearance. This innovation opens up a world of possibilities, from more realistic prosthetics to robots that can seamlessly blend into human spaces.

As we delve into the details of this research, we’ll uncover how these scientists are bridging the gap between artificial and biological systems, potentially revolutionizing fields ranging from health care to human-robot interaction.

What’s the big deal?

We’re talking about robots that not only look human-like but also have skin that can heal, sweat and even tan. This isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating robots that can interact more naturally with humans and their environment.

How does it work?

The secret lies in something called “perforation-type anchors.” These clever little structures are inspired by the way our own skin attaches to the tissues underneath. Essentially, they allow living tissue to grow into and around the robot’s surface, creating a secure bond.

The researchers used a combination of human dermal fibroblasts and human epidermal keratinocytes to create this living skin. They cultured these cells in a carefully prepared mixture of collagen and growth media, allowing the tissue to mature and form a structure similar to human skin.

The minds behind the innovation

This groundbreaking research was conducted at the Biohybrid Systems Laboratory at the University of Tokyo, led by Professor Shoji Takeuchi. The team’s work is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in robotics and bioengineering.

Building a face that can smile

One of the coolest demonstrations of this technology is a robotic face covered with living tissue that can actually smile. The researchers created a system where the skin-covered surface can be moved to mimic facial expressions.

To achieve this, they designed a robotic face with multiple parts, including a base with perforation-type anchors for both a silicone layer and the dermis equivalent. This silicone layer mimics subcutaneous tissue, contributing to a more realistic smiling expression.

Challenges and solutions

Getting living tissue to stick to a robot isn’t as easy as it sounds. The team had to overcome issues like making sure the tissue could grow into the anchor points properly. They even used plasma treatment to make the surface more “tissue-friendly.”

The researchers also had to consider the size and arrangement of the anchors. Through finite element method simulations, they found that larger anchors provided more tensile strength, but there was a trade-off with the area they occupied.

Why this matters

This technology could be a game-changer for fields like prosthetics and humanoid robotics. Imagine prosthetic limbs that look and feel just like real skin or robots that can interact with humans in more natural ways.

The ability to create skin that can move and express emotions opens up new possibilities for human-robot interaction. It could lead to more empathetic and relatable robotic assistants in various fields, from health care to customer service.

While we’re still a long way from seeing robots with fully functional living skin walking among us, this research from the University of Tokyo opens up exciting possibilities. It’s a step towards creating robots that blur the line between machines and living organisms.

As we continue to advance in this field, we’ll need to grapple with the technical challenges and ethical implications of creating increasingly lifelike machines. Future research might focus on improving the durability of living skin, enhancing its ability to heal or even incorporating sensory capabilities. One thing’s for sure: The future of robotics is looking more human than ever.

15 Outrageous Halloween Homes

Written by Nate Morgan — September 22, 2014

Reposted from:  http://ilovehalloween.net/blogs/news/16787547-15-outrageous-halloween-homes

One of our favorite things about Halloween are the outrageous home decorations that seem to pop up out of nowhere. Every neighborhood has one of “those” houses; AKA the ones that seem to be in relentless competition for the most festive house award. To say the inhabitants of such houses are dedicated is a gross understatement, and we have nothing but respect for their enthusiasm. So, we’ve collected 15 of the most over-the-top Halloween decorations we could find. Enjoy!

1. Giant Spider

Wow… Looks like the enormous arachnid apocalypse is finally upon us. We just hope they have home insurance.

2. Spider Invasion

… And as the giant spider apocalypse continues, even the babies lust for human blood.

3. Nightmare Before Christmas Characters

This family deserves nothing less than a personal doorstep visit from Tim Burton himself!

4. Crash Landing

Sadly, these decorations are usually short-lived because the government comes to clean them up immediately.

5. “Pop is Dead”

They forgot “Here lies Yoncé. She (didn’t) wake up like this, and now we can see her halo.”

6. Huge Prehistoric Awesomeness

It would be awesome if they had the Jurassic Park theme playing from hidden speakers as people drove by. Totally bad@#$.

7. Monster Silhouettes

“Honey, do you ever get the feeling that the neighbors are watching us?”

8. Zombie Takeover

We thought sleek, modern houses like this one couldn’t get any more sinister. We were wrong.

9. Simpsons Extravaganza

We can’t help but wonder if they like the Simpsons…

10. Colossal Pumpkin King

How on Earth was this built?! We’re pretty sure the reason that man is smiling is because he somehow avoided almost certain death while erecting that monstrosity.

11. Ghost Buster Central

“If there’s somethin’ strange in your neighborhood, who ya gonna call?”… Not these residents, they’ll just make everything more strange.

12. Inflatable Nightmares

A halloween horror headline: “Oxygen-deprived family perishes after blowing up too many holiday inflatables.”

13. Get the Cops Called to Your House

Yeah, we know “less is more,” but this one may be too realistic for certain neighbors. For those of you wanting to duplicate this, don’t be surprised if the po po show up.

14. Pumpkin Palace

If this isn’t a fire hazard we don’t know what is.

15. This is Halloween

Last but not least, the ultimate Halloween decoration money shot. This is our favorite, by far.

But don’t go anywhere yet! We have to give a shout out to our creative followers: April Victorine and her family created this awesome haunted carriage scene completely from scratch. The skull pillar was created by our friend James Kyle who used chicken wire, expanding spray foam and milk jug skulls…

Have some Halloween handy work you’re proud of? Let us know and we may feature you in our next blog post. Thanks for reading!

Creepy – People Who Use Plastic Surgery to Look Like Dolls

As you know, I am a huge fan of cosplay – where people dress up in costumes, make-up, masks, etc. to look like comic book, steampunk, video game, or other characters.  This is NOT that.  This is people, especially growing in popularity in Ukraine, where people use cosmetic surgery and very unhealthy diets to make themselves look like non-human dolls.  All of these pictures are people, not dolls.  You agree, a little creepy?  (NOTE:  If any of these pictures are just make-up and not surgery, let me know and I will remove them.  I know some have obvious eye make-up added while others are tattooed like that.)

20 Haunting Pictures Of Abandoned Asylums

20 Haunting Pictures Of Abandoned Asylums

Abandoned mental asylums litter forgotten landscapes across the world. But these spooky buildings don’t compare to the fright you’ll experience inside the notorious Briarcliff Manor, the setting of American Horror Story: Asylum. Whet your macabre appetite with these haunting photos, and commit yourself to American Horror Story: Asylum. Wednesdays at 10p only on FX.

[My personal note – In Japan, ruins are known as haikyo (廃虚?) (literally “abandoned place”).  There is a growing interest in Haikyo exploration and photography if you are also interested in the eerie coolness of things falling apart.  I have posted other posts on this, including abandoned Soviet Union cold war facilities and abandoned amusement parks.]
