For you hopeful THC fiends…lol…

Scientists engineer yeast to produce active marijuana compound, THC

Trying to replicate the “Ferrari of the plant world”.

Yeast has been engineered to produce the main psychoactive compound in marijuana – tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Responsible for the majority of marijuana’s psychological effects – including the high – THC can also be use to treat symptoms of HIV infection and chemotherapy and researchers are hoping their yeast will be able to pump it out more efficiently than producing synthetic versions.

“This is something that could literally change the lives of millions of people,” Kevin Chen from Hyasynth Bio, a Canada-based company that’s been engineering yeasts to produce both THC and cannabidiol – another active compound that has shown promise as a medical treatment – told The New York Times.

Now, researchers from the Technical University of Dortmund in Germany have outlined in the journal Biotechnology Letters how they looked into which genes the marijuana plant uses to produce THC, and then engineered those genes into their yeast. They then fed a cocktail of specially chosen molecules to the yeast, and it essentially ‘poops’ out the THC.

They’ve also reportedly managed to produce cannabidiol in the same way, but are yet to publish the details. The big challenge now will be figuring out how to replace these molecules with a raw material such as sugar to make the process cheap, easy, and commercially competitive.

The purpose isn’t to replace the marijuana plant, because let’s face it, it’s doing a pretty good job on its own. As Jonathan Page, an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia in Canada who helped sequence the THC and cannabidiol genes, told Roxanne Khamsi at The New York Times: “Right now, we have a plant that is essentially the Ferrari of the plant world when it comes to producing the chemical of interest. Cannabis is hard to beat.”

The idea instead is to offer up an alternative for places such as Europe, where medicinal compounds from marijuana would be welcomed if they didn’t come in the form of a plant that could be illegally farmed. And synthetic versions of THC are currently available in pill form to treat several side effects of having HIV or chemotherapy, but the chemical synthesis involved is complicated and expensive.

What yeast could also offer is the potential to more efficiently test the medicinal properties of specific active compounds in marijuana, which have shown promise in treating everything from seizures and inflammation to cancer and parkinson’s disease. Yasmin Hurd, a professor of neuroscience and psychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, told Tech Insider that using all the compounds in marijuana simultaneously is like “throwing 400 tablets in a cocktail and saying ‘take this,'” rather than figuring out which component of that cocktail is really beneficial for the specific disease.

Because right now, rigorous scientific evidence showing that marijuana and its constituents effectively treat the symptoms of many of the illnesses for which they’ve been prescribed is lacking.

“Marijuana is increasingly embraced as medicine, yet there is limited evidencethat it is effective against many of the conditions for which it is prescribed,” The New York Times reports. “Researchers hoping to separate fact from wishful thinking will need much better access to marijuana’s unique constituents. Modified yeast may provide them.”

The War

When I was 21 years old, I joined the United States Air Force.  My Commander-in-Chief was President Ronald Reagan.  I was ready to die for my country and still am.  We were trained to make the enemy die for their country and for us to live for ours.  If I was in good shape and young, I might join the French Foreign Legion just to fight the bastards who celebrate hurting people in Paris that can’t fight back.  Those vicious bullies are not so brave when you have weapons too.

I hope my country and the world realizes finally that we are at war.  The enemy knows this and declared it nearly 30 years ago now when they issued a jihad against us.  There is no negotiating with a strong enemy, full of belief in their cause, and so far winning.  You have to hunt them down and destroy them until the remnants are too weak to rebuild.  Whether it be Nazis, the Mongol Hordes, or radical Islamic terrorists, they have to be annihilated.  There will always be people who want to rule the world in their own sick ways and will not respond to anything but superior force.

I will do what as I can as a gimp old man to contribute to this effort.  If you can, find a worthy cause, like Wounded Warriors, the Red Cross, the USO, or others to contribute.  If you are in the military, I hope our leaders give you the tools and the go ahead to fight this war.  Like most major conflicts, this will take time, resolve, and loss of life to win.  Unfortunately, these nationless wars tend to take decades or even centuries.  In a country with a 5 second attention span, I worry we are not up to the fight…

This Incredible Mile Long Wooden Xylophone Plays Bach When You Roll A Ball Down It

Have you ever seen a giant wooden xylophone in the forest? Just kidding, of course you haven’t! Well until now that is…. The Japanese adverting agency known as Drill Inc. built a giant wooden xylophone that’s roughly a mile long in the middle of a forest. Each wooden key is made up individual notes, and when a wooden ball starts rolling down it, it plays Bach’s famous Cantata 147. And yeah… they did all of this for a cell phone commercial.

The Postal Service…Sigh…

Yesterday was Veterans Day and the USPS was closed.  My roommate wanted to mail something, but all the postal service locations and offices were closed.  So, driving over to eat lunch, to what would our wandering eyes appear but a postal truck delivering gear…

I finally caught up with the truck, wondering if it was stolen, going to maintenance, or what the heck?  The driver told me they were delivering for Amazon Prime.  That’s right, your postal service is not taking care of you on Veterans Day, even though you pay the majority of their costs – but they ARE delivering on holidays for their contract with Amazon Prime.

Why is a federal agency running private sector contracts?  Why is it we have a postal service at all?  Historically, the postal service was created to help with military communications.  Perhaps if they can help Amazon but not taxpayers, the time to privatize is long past…

The Days AFTER Veteran’s Day

As a disabled veteran, I very much appreciate all the discounts and well wishes along with the national holiday to honor us veterans.

However, for the other 364 days…  Not for the veteran, but for yourself, I encourage you to do one or both of the following…

  1.  Donate to:

The Wounded Warrior Project

http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/

2.  Actually visit a VA facility, and just say hello to a wounded veteran.  Bring them a chocolate bar, a book, a video game, or just a heartfelt handshake.

Not only is it really appreciated by wounded veterans to have visitors, but in my experience, the visitors get more benefit than the veteran.

Thanks!

F-35A Lightning II fighter gets new gun

Ultra advanced stealth, fighter jet speed … and now the military’s F-35 has a new weapon.

The F-35 Lightning II is a truly fifth-generation fighter jet. This advanced powerful single-seat and single-engine fighter is designed to be capable of a range of missions with just one aircraft.

Test pilot Maj. Charles “Flak” Trickey recently fired the F35A’s internal Gun Airborne Unit -22/A 25mm Gatling gun system in three airborne gunfire bursts. A success, this first aerial gun test was conducted out at the China Lake, Calif., test range on Oct. 30 2015.

This is a key step in certifying the gun for use in the F-35A and the aircraft is on track to enter initial operational capability with the U.S. Air Force next year.

The F-35 is the result of collaboration between prime contractor Lockheed Martin and principal partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems.

Next-Gen Air Dominance

Stealth was built into this aircraft from the very start. The F-35 also possesses other fifth-generation features like integrated avionics, sensor fusion and incredibly powerful sensor packages.

The Pratt & Whitney F135 propulsion system gives the aircraft phenomenal power – it is able to reach speeds of over 1199 mph.

With this new gun, pilots will have the ability to engage air-to-ground and air-to-air targets. The 25mm gun is embedded into the F-35A’s left wing in a way that keeps the aircraft stealthy.

Over the next year, testing will continue with the gun integrated into the fighter’s sensor fusion software. The software will provide targeting data to the pilot through the pilot’s state of the art helmet-mounted display.

Even the helmets on this aircraft are next generation. Pilots wearing them can see through the aircraft and the heads up display provides unprecedented data. Each pilot gets a personalized version.

Rather than deploy different aircraft specializing in different things, the F-35 can tackle a range of tasks by itself. Highly versatile, the F-35 can handle missions like air-to-air combat, electronic attack, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and air-to-ground strikes.

Stealth

The F-35 gives pilots the ability to penetrate deep into enemy areas without being detected. The advanced materials and airframe design mean that F-35s can evade radars that other fighters cannot. The plane can get through highly defended air spaces without ever being detected and then clear the way for U.S. forces.

Using weapons like precision-guided munitions and air-to-air radar-guided missiles, the pilots can engage long-range ground targets without being detected and tracked by the enemy.

Combat

When faced with enemy fighter aircraft, the F-35s have a number of advantages. For starters, the F-35 pilots will be able to detect the enemy aircraft long before they are detected themselves. In aerial combat, this means the F-35 can take lethal action first. The fighter’s weapons systems will also give it a big advantage over enemy aircraft.

Pilots can leverage the aircraft’s advanced electronic warfare abilities to

locate and track enemy forces. To reach highly protected targets, pilots can jam enemy radars and disrupt attacks on their aircraft using the advanced avionics system.

In an F-35, pilots have 360-degree real time battlespace data. The sensor package is state-of-the-art and any data the sensors collect can be securely shared with commanders all over the world, giving them a more complete picture of operations as they unfold.

The aircraft has a core processor that can perform a mind-blowing 400 billion operations per second.

This helps enable next-gen electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, but also helps to recommend the next target to attack and the best weapon to use.

Replacing Classic Fighters

Over the years, U.S. fighter fleets have been aging and becoming smaller.

There are three variants of the F-35, all of which will be replacing military aircraft. F-35A takes off and lands conventionally. The F-35B is capable of short-take off and vertical-landing and the F-35C is carrier-based.

For the U.S. Air Force, the F-35 variants will replace the A-10 Thunderbolt II and F-16 Fighting Falcon. For the U.S. Navy, they will replace the F/A-18 Hornet. The U.S. Marine Corps will be replacing the F/A-18 and AV-8B Harrier with F-35s.
