DarkCon was a Lot of Fun!

DarkCon just wrapped up at the Mesa Marriott Convention Center.  My reading went well on Saturday, but I was stuck in a room off from the regular part of the event, next to the hospitality suite, so I think a lot of people missed it.  Also, since I was a late addition, all it said in the program was – Michael Bradley – Reading.  Oh well, the people who showed up got a free signed copy of my book.  I also had the pleasure of meeting another person who had read my book and liked it, and his wife had liked it as well.  I did not think about it at the time, as a few of us talked for a good 90 minutes after my event ended, but one thing made me feel especially good.  The person who read the book and came to get his copy signed was from England.  Afterwards, I was glad I must have got my research correct because he mentioned the behavior of the English aristocracy in my book was very accurate.  Cool!

My wife and I are both fans as well as my writing steampunk, so we had fun hanging out as well.  We played two games, one was Time Renegades: Mission, which was new for her, but I had played the Time Renegades: Arena at Phoenix ComicCon.  You can find the game information here:  http://timerenegades.com/

We also played Fortune and Glory, which was very fun and has you travel the globe as adventurers seeking lost treasures and fighting nazis, a zeppelin and monsters.  Both of the game masters were fun and did a good job.  You can find the game information here:  http://www.flyingfrog.net/fortuneandglory/fang_about.html

I had a very embarrassing moment.  As we were looking through the wares of the various vendors, we came across Ernie Hudson, who is famous of course as the fourth Ghostbuster.  I struck up a conversation with him and I think he was a bit bored as there were not that many people around at the time.  I don’t know why, but I asked if he was also on Designing Women, a show I have never watched, but somehow that dumb question left my lips with nary a thought.  Ernie Hudson rolled his eyes and informed me that was Meshach Taylor, a fellow actor that often got confused with him.  He said they had once taken a picture with each other and laughed about it.  I felt about one inch tall, made some awkward, thanks for talking to me small talk, and shrunk away.  Also at the event was actress Meg Foster, who my wife did not recognize, which made me laugh.  Later she saw some old screen shots of her in various roles and remembered her.  Both Meg and Ernie looked in great shape.

Thank you Stormcrow and all the other folks at the Dark Ones and DarkCon for inviting me to present.  I really appreciate it!

Story Published in Latest ConNotations New Zine

My story, A Primer on Stem Cell Research was selected for publication by the awesome folks at ConNotations New Zine.  Here is a link – http://www.casfs.org/ConNotations/index.php

Although I primarily write fiction, as some of you know I have an extensive background in science, especially with technology and healthcare.  This is a non-fiction article to bring people up to speed on what stem cells are and why there is so much focus and controversy on the topic.  Please check out all the other interesting things available through ConNotations as well, and The Central Arizona Speculative Fiction Society (CASFS) which can be found here: http://www.casfs.org/index.shtml

I plan to write a number of articles on a variety of science topics over the next several months.  I will keep you up to date under Current Projects and in posts here as well.

A New Website for Christmas, to go Along with This One

My son Alex created a companion website for me at michaelwbradley.com.  It is very cool and I will be updating that one as well as this one.  It will have more general presskit information and I will continue to blog at this location.  Santa brought my wife a new Kindle Fire, which is now officially her favorite present ever, surpassing even the big fluffy robe I got for her many years ago that she wore until it was threadbare.  My son and his girlfriend Ryan got a horseback riding tour and my daughter got a two tickets to Wicked.  Everyone seemed very happy.  We had the family over of course, but also our best friends Linda, Scott and Matt.  Scott supplied the cigars and we had a nice game of Scrabble out in the crisp Arizona 55 degree air.  (Freezing weather for us in the Southwest…)  For Christmas Andrew kept us company for some intense games involving words, timers and buzzers;  Catch phrase and Taboo to be exact.

I hope all of you had an equally enjoyable Christmas!

Very Short Story for the West Valley Writers’ Group

Here is the story in its entirety.  The exercise was to start with the concept “you swing your legs out of the car and immediately feel yourself falling into a hole,” in less than 500 words.  This one is only around 275 words:

Shade Worlds

Bane swung his feet out of his car, stood up, and immediately began to fall down a hole.  The shifts between planes were happening more frequently and unpredictably now.  Bane knew he had to find the stolen Time Key before all the parallel universes collided.  Even as a Time Bureau field agent, the constant shifts were taking a toll on his sanity.  Just as he adjusted to one reality, he crashed into another.

Bane stood shakily as he stumbled into his new existence.  He was atop a barren mountain and heat bore down on him like a vice of suffering.  Nearby vents gave off the sickening scent of volcanic gases and the ground was stained yellow by large splotches of sulfur.  Just as Bane understood he was now on some prehistoric volcanic plateau, he spotted his prey.

Just across the ridge and weaving among the bubbling mud pools he saw the Time Smuggler running for his life.  Bane patted his trusty time sniffing band with satisfaction.  It had finally led him to the perpetrator.

Bane pulled out his weapon, a sleek black barrel; like a baton with a set of switches on it.  He pondered placing it on stun, but this crook had led him on too long of a chase and he was angry.  He set the device to kill mode and trod down the hill, grinning as he steadily gained ground on his stumbling and tripping foe.  As much as the constant shifts had weakened him, it had done much more damage to the unconditioned thief.

It was only a matter of time now.  Bane chuckled at the irony.

Reviews are Coming in From Amazon!!!

Here are the first four reviews of The Travelers’ Club and the Ghost Ship Kindle version on Amazon.  If you have a copy of the e-book, and have not yet commented please do!  Currently, I have a 5 star rating and hope I can hold on to it!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great, Fresh Take on This Genre,November 6, 2011
This review is from: The Travelers’ Club and The Ghost Ship (Kindle Edition)

This was a very unique, intelligent take on a style that I’m not normally a big fan of. The characters are great and the story takes its time when it should, while packing plenty of action into a very well-thought plot. Its clear to me, with the charisma and repartee between the characters, that this needs to be a series. And I’m eagerly waiting for the second installment! (*wink to the author*)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!,November 3, 2011
This review is from: The Travelers’ Club and The Ghost Ship (Kindle Edition)
This story has plenty of action and adventure. I loved the mysterious Sci-Fi elements while being taken back to Victorian times. Reggie and Ash are my two favorite characters and I hope to read more adventures about them in the future. All in all, a great read.
4.0 out of 5 stars Steampunk Sci-Fi,October 30, 2011
This review is from: The Travelers’ Club and The Ghost Ship (Kindle Edition)

The novel’s characters and story are interesting, and the setting is definitely Steampunk science fiction. This book is a good read for any science fiction fan.

Inspiration

Inspiration comes from so many places.  Sometimes a TV commercial, sometimes a scene out your window as you drive by in your car, or more often, from personal experience.  In my own case, I recently had a strange pink spot on my upper leg.  I went in for one of my usual sinus/ear conditions and while I was there asked the Doctor if they could look at the spot.  They did not know what it was either, so they sent me to a Dermatologist.  The Dermatologist was puzzled so they did what they always do, they sliced it off and sent it to a lab.  The results were somewhat disquieting – cancer.  It was some kind of squamous cell carcinoma, maybe Boren’s disease.  I am probably cured, they think they got it all, but the C word can be frightening.  All this led me to write two pieces of fiction – one was The Spot and the other is The Hair.  They are submitted for publication so if they are accepted I will post the link, if not, I will post them here for all to read.

Steampunk Street III Signing in Mesa

Friday night went great!  We met hundreds of fellow Steampunk fans and were lucky to be set up next to the Arizona Steampunk Society, of which I am a proud member, and a Steampunk band called Jellied Brainz that was very fun to listen to just a few spots down from us.  Vinnie Alascia joined me at the booth selling original copies of his books as well.  It was great to meet people, sign copies of The Travelers’ Club and the Ghost Ship and hand out bookmarks.  It also sparked some more Kindle sales, which is always nice.  I glad that I had a lot of friends at the event and the time went very quickly, even though we were there for close to six hours.  Thanks also to my wife for helping to set up and letting me use her car since my own has no space for anything.

Fun Night at the Central Valley Writers at Hob Nobs

We had a great time last night as always.  They were out of the voodoo chicken sandwiches so I had to go for the less health pepperoni pizza option, along with my usual triple espresso campana.  I was able to read Chapter 3 of the Blood Bank and get some great feedback.  Scott read a short for submission to our alternative history anthology.  David had a great short on a bar scene and Jacob had an unusual but well written poem based on a French music video from 1962.  Very esoteric.  Kathleen read Chapter 8 of her novel on a woman’s voyage of discovery after her retirement and facing isolation.  We did not get to Andrew’s horror piece, which is unfortunate, but probably saved us all a few nightmares last night.  If you are a beginning or experienced writer, there is nothing like these groups to keep you enthusiastic about the craft.
