Three Dimensional Animals Painted in Layers of Resin by Keng Lye

Three Dimensional Animals Painted in Layers of Resin by Keng Lye

Singapore-based artist Keng Lye creates near life-like sculptures of animals relying on little but paint, resin and a phenomenal sense of perspective. Lye slowly fills bowls, buckets, and boxes with alternating layers of acrylic paint and resin, creating aquatic animal life that looks so real it could almost pass for a photograph. The artist is using a technique very similar to Japanese painter Riusuke Fukahori who was featured on this blog a little over a year ago, though Lye seems to take things a step further by making his paint creations protrude from the surface, adding another level of dimension to a remarkable medium. See much more of this series titled Alive Without Breath over on deviantART. (via ian brooks)

UPDATE: I have some additional details from the artist that I’d like to add here, as this post seems to be getting a lot of attention. Via email Lye shares with me:

I started my first series in 2012 where all the illustrations were “flat” and depth was created using the layering of resin and acrylic over the different parts of the illustration. This year, I started on the octopus and it was purely an experiment; I just wanted to see whether I could push this technique to a higher level. After applying acrylic paint straight onto the resin, I incorporated a 3-D element in this instance, it was a small pebble for the ranchu and octopus. For the turtle, I used an egg shell for the turtle shell and acrylic paint for the rest of the finishing. The whole idea here was to give the art work an even more 3D effect therefore you can have a better view from any angle. I think there are still many other techniques to explore.

So to be clear the elements that extrude from the top of the resin are actually physical pieces that have been painted to match the layers of acrylic and resin below.

3D Pencil Drawings

Pencil sketches that seem to stand up off the page

JUNE 18, 2013

Most of these drawings by Ramon Bruin seem relatively simple, but at the same time, because of their shadows and some intriguingly placed real-life props in the photographs, the sketched images appear to be almost magically leaving the bounds of the paper they’re drawn on…

Anamorphic Sculptures

ANAMORPHIC SCULPTURES

Art · Jan 30, 2013

London-based artist Jonty Hurwitz creates ‘Anamorphic Sculptures’ which only reveal themselves once facing a reflective cylinder. Hurwitz took an engineering degree in Johannesburg where he discovered the fine line between art and science. He has lived in England for many years, working in the online industry though he quietly levitated into the world of art inspired by a need to make ‘something real’. Hurwitz discovered that he could use science as an artistic paintbrush. Each of his sculptures is a study on the physics of how we perceive space and is the stroke of over 1 billion calculations and algorithms.

Art Sculptures Surprisingly Made of Only Wood

Hyper-realistic Sculptures are Made Entirely of Wood by Tom Eckert

Thursday, May 23, 2013  Jazlyn

Artist and Professor Tom Eckert uses traditional processes to carve these hyper-realistic sculptures of everyday objects entirely made of wood. He uses plenty of carpentry techniques in his creative sculptured pieces, such as constructing, bending, laminating, carving and painting.
After receiving his M.F.A. degree from Arizona State University, Eckert began teaching at the university. He has exhibited his work in over 150 national and international exhibitions. Recently his incredible artwork has been featured in the Netherlands after getting lot of appreciation throughout the United States.

Grandmother Paints for First Time after Two Strokes

Grandmother Paints For The First Time In Her Life After Suffering Two Strokes

Posted: 05/02/2013 1:29 pm EDT  |  Updated: 05/02/2013 1:29 pm EDT

Grandma Paints After Stroke

A family was “astounded” to find their 90-year-old grandmother had produced a lovely painting, after showing no interest in art her entire life.

“She has never painted in her life,” grandson Casey Nelson wrote on Reddit, where the photo quickly became viral.

Nelson connects his grandmother’s new found artistry with two separate strokes she suffered on both sides of her brain more than a year ago.

“She now suffers from Wernicke’s Aphasia, a condition that inhibits her ability to make sense when she speaks, and her ability to understand other’s speech,” Nelson explained. “She is often confused and angry and sometimes doesn’t recognize me, but [she] has her bright days too. She has been living in nursing homes since the stroke, and that’s where she did the painting. It was part of an art activity a few weeks ago. As far as anyone knows, this is her first attempt at art of any kind.”

We’re just as impressed as Nelson is by his grandmother’s new work. Creativity sparked or furthered after experiencing brain damage is well-documented. Among the many who have become artists after having a strokeJon Sarkin‘s story stands out. Once a straight-laced chiropractor, Sarkin became a passionate and much-sought-after artist with a compulsive need to create mixed-media pieces.

Fantasy Animal Sculptures by Ellen Jewett

19 PHANTASMAGORICAL ANIMALS BY ELLEN JEWETT

The phantasmagorical and surreal animal sculptures by Canadian artist Ellen Jewett. Between dream and nightmare, some strange creations born of a symbiosis between organic and mechanical elements, a meeting between fantasy, gothic and steampunk. Some very detailed sculptures in clay on a metal frame.
