Straw Dinosaurs Appear in Japanese Fields, Try To Eat Humans

Straw Dinosaurs Appear in Japanese Fields, Try To Eat Humans

It’s September. In Japan that means rice is being harvested across the country. It also means straw art.

After the grains are harvested, rice straw (“wara” in Japanese) is left behind. In Niigata Prefecture, however, locals have been turning that rice straw into art with a yearly Wara Art Festival.

Bringing these giant beasts, not all of which are dinosaurs, to life is not easy!

While not a dinosaur, this does appear to be a giant enemy crab.

Twitter user agedashi0210 captures the wonderful detail that goes into each sculpture.

Back in 2013, Kotaku first introduced these festivities, and this year’s straw sculptures are as impressive as ever. Maybe even more so!

I Create Giant Sculptures From Scrap Wood

by Thomas Winther

I’m a Danish artist Thomas Dambo. Everyday I scavenge wood and other materials in my home city Copenhagen, and create different sculptures.

I truly love working with scrap wood. There’s so much of it everywhere so I can pretty much build what ever I can imagine. I hope my sculptures will inspire others to recycle.

The Captivating Beauty of Libraries Around the World

New York-based, French photographer Franck Bohbot documents the breathtaking beauty of libraries in his ongoing series House of Books. Traveling to cities like Paris, Rome, and Boston, the photographer creates a visual record of the bastions of knowledge and learning that have been the pillars of civilization for thousands of years.

In addition to centuries’ worth of information, these libraries found around the world house artifacts and stunning architectural elements that date back hundreds of years. Endless shelves of books run along ornately decorated walls beneath arching ceilings, creating strikingly symmetrical scenes. Rows of desks, chairs, and lamps invite readers to sit and lose themselves in a quiet world filled with rich words, the soothing rustle of pages turning, and the comforting smell of ink on paper.

Renaissance/Victorian Crossplay Mash-ups!

This is a collection of the awesome work of Sacha Goldberger who combines models, costumes and photography to create what I think are pretty cool and unique cosplay ideas and art.

Imagine your favorite comic book, movie, and fairy tale heroes and villains if they existed during the Renaissance. What might a painted portrait of them from those times have looked like?

Wonder no more. Photographer Sacha Goldberger was part of an event in Paris recently where these iconic characters—including Batman, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, The Hulk, Darth Vader, Catwoman, Princess Leia, Joker, Superman, Snow White, and others—were photographed with a decidedly old school look to them, creating a fascinating set of Renaissance painting-style cosplay images.

You can check out a bunch of the images below to see how some of your favorites would have looked in a different time.

It’s also worth noting that these are all said to be legit shots. No photoshop has been used to enhance them, even with the models in the Superman and Princess Leia images, who both look eerily similar to Christopher Reeve and Carrie Fisher.

More of the images can be found at Goldberger’s Facebook page, where you can also find images of the gallery where these pictures were hung on the wall to really make them look authentic.

In this fun series of photos titled Thanksgiving Special, San Francisco-based artist Hannah Rothstein imagines Thanksgiving dinners as plated by famous artists throughout history. Gravy, corn, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce, and even the plate itself is used as a medium for edible artworks in the style of Jackson Pollock, Cindy Sherman, Georges Seurat, and Vincent van Gogh. To see all 10 artworks head over to Rothstein’s website. Prints of the artistic plates are available, and Rothstein is donating 10% of the profits to the SF-Marin Food Bank.
