As octopuses shoot out ink as a defense mechanism, so sperm whales blast threats with poop. At least that’s the theory explained by a diver to the BBC.
Keri Wilk and three fellow divers were engulfed in what he describes as a “poonado” let loose by one such whale off the coast of Dominica.
Wilk wasn’t using scuba gear, since that can bother whales, the New York Daily News reports. That means he had little protection: “I had poop in my eyes, mouth, wetsuit, everywhere,” he tells the BBC.
“I was soaked in it from head to toe.” He described the cloud of feces as being some “30 or 40 meters in diameter,” or about 100 feet.
The whale was diving, and the animals often poop while diving, Wilk said. But this time, it stopped mid-dive. “And then it started to evacuate its bowels, and didn’t stop for several minutes.” It even seemed to try to wave the feces toward the divers with its tail.
“But, after leaving the cloud, it quickly washed away and didn’t leave a smell on us,” he says. The group got some rather alarming photos of the whole thing.
(Whales, it seems, aren’t so into being watched.)

Deflate-gate dessert: These cookies are missing a little air. (Boston Common Coffee Company)
A Boston bakery is bringing a little levity to New England Patriots’ Deflate-gate with its less-than-full football cookies.
Amid reports that 11 of the 12 balls the Patriots used in the AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts were underinflated, the Boston Common Coffee Company decided whip up the treat.
“Looks like our pastry chef let a little too much air out of these cookies to make them regulation cookies. But come on down and get them before Roger Goodell,” the shop wrote on its Facebook page.
Manager Wawa Toyloy told FoxNews.com that the limited-supply cookies, which sell at a deflated price of $1 each, are a going fast at each of its four stores.
On Wednesday, the company’s co-owner, Peter Femino –a Patriots fan — said they decided to punt, despite the risk of angering fans.
“They were made, and I said, ‘Let’s put them out.’ Just like anything else, customers can decide — we aren’t forcing people to buy them. We are just making light of a bad situation. It’s a sport; it’s a game,” Femino told Boston Magazine. “I’ve never been one to brush something under the couch or under the rug.”
Some Facebook followers cried foul, saying the bakery was making light of the situation, but most were supportive.
Toyloy says that the orders are rolling in as Deflate-gate grows. On Thursday, Patriots coach Bill Belichick denied knowing that quarterback Tom Brady was throwing deflated footballs.
But the Boston Common Coffee Company is the only company to capitalize on the pigskin controversy.
From now until Super Bowl Sunday, Boston’s Cask ‘n Flagon bar is offering free appetizers to diners who bring in a new regulation-size football (either deflated or inflated), which will be given to the Good Sports, a nonprofit organization that gives sporting equipment to disadvantaged youth nationwide.

I needed a standard 60 watt bulb for a lamp at my house. Seems easy. So, at the store, I go and there are a row of items which vaguely resemble light bulbs. None of them are the traditional bulb I have seen for some five decades. Instead, there are squiggly ones, triangle, square, ones that look like bike reflectors, and there are conversion charts that are harder than converting to metric.
So, I figure I will choose one that says it is like a regular 60w bulb and looks to have the right screw in size metal twisty part. This is written by a person who earned an Electronics Engineering degree in 1985… There are no 49 cent bulbs. I am left with a weird-looking thing for $4.99, a more normal one for $5.99, and one for $23.99. The one for $23.99 says it will last an average of 22.3 years and save me tons of money.
That’s right, a bulb that lasts 22.3 years. I am 51. I am not guaranteed to last 22.3 years myself. That is quite a commitment to make to a light bulb. Even a lamp. How many lamps or bulbs do you really want to commit to for 22.3 years. Some home mortgages are shorter. Many people have careers that are shorter. Just 20 years in the military to get retirement. You could buy this bulb in basic training and keep it with you to your retirement home.
I bought the one for $5.99. When I opened the tiny package at home, there were two of them in there. I am not sure I will know where the second bulb is when the first one finally gives out. It is expected to last me five years. I was simply relieved when I screwed in this new technology and turned the switch that a light came on and seems to be reasonably bright.
Don’t get me started on the new energy-saving track lights in my kitchen and entryway. When I first turn them on, they are so dim I am not sure they are working. It takes them about fifteen minutes to reach proper lighting. It reminds me again of the military when we were trained to adjust our vision over time for night-time operations, then how to work with flash bangs. I am finally of the age where new technology is not always welcome. Even for a tech geek like me.
