Brain cells can live at least twice as long as the organisms in which they reside, according to new research.

The study, published Monday, Feb. 25, in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that mouse neurons, or brain cells, implanted into rats can survive with the rats into old age, twice as long as the life span of the original mice. The findings are good news for life extension enthusiasts.

‘We are slowly but continuously prolonging the life of humans.’

– Dr. Lorenzo Magrassi, a neurosurgeon at the University of Pavia in Italy

“We are slowly but continuously prolonging the life of humans,” said study co-author Dr. Lorenzo Magrassi, a neurosurgeon at the University of Pavia in Italy.

So if the human life span could be stretched to 160 years, “then you are not going to lose your neurons, because your neurons do not have a fixed lifetime.”

Long-lived cells
While most of the cells in the human body are being constantly replaced, humans are born with almost all the neurons they will ever have. [10 Odd Facts About the Brain]

Magrassi and his colleagues wanted to know whether neurons could outlive the organisms in which they live (barring degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s).

To do so, the researchers took neurons from mice and implanted them into the brains of about 60 rat fetuses.

The team then let the rats live their entire lives, euthanizing them when they were moribund and unlikely to survive for more than two days, and then inspected their brains. The life span of the mice was only about 18 months, while the rats typically lived twice as long.

The rats were found to be completely normal (though not any smarter), without any signs of neurological problems at the end of their lives.

And the neurons that had been transplanted from mice were still alive when the rats died. That means it’s possible the cells could have survived even longer if they were transplanted into a longer-lived species.

Life extension
The findings suggest that our brain cells won’t fail before our bodies do.

“Think what a terrible thing it could be if you survive your own brain,” Magrassi told LiveScience.

While the findings were done in rats, not humans, they could also have implications for neuronal transplants that could be used for degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease, Magrassi said.

But just because brain cells may be able to live indefinitely doesn’t mean humans could live forever.

Aging is dependent on more than the life span of all the individual parts in the body, and scientists still don’t understand exactly what causes people to age, Magrassi said.

Biologists Create ‘Zombie Cells’

Zombies are all well and good for stories, video games, movies and TV, but in real life, they would seriously suck.  Heck, I have zombies in some of my books.  But why on Earth would scientists actually create Zombies?  No joke?  Our own scientists at super-secret Sandia Laboratories in Albuquerque New Mexico have created nano-particle level duplicate zombie cells.  Why can’t anyone read science fiction and heed its warnings?  If a celestial event does not wipe us out, it is only a matter of time until our own stupid, reckless exploration of science does it.

Biologists Create ‘Zombie Cells’ In The Lab Which Outperform Living Counterparts

Biological researchers have created dead ‘zombie’ cells in the lab which outperform living cells.

Seriously.

A team at Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico have innovated a technique whereby mammalian cells are coated with silica to form a near-perfect replicas.

The silica replicants can survive greater pressures and temperatures than flesh, and perform many functions better than the original cells did when alive.

By painting the cells with silicic acid in a petri dish, the acid embalms the organic matter in the cell down to the nanometer level.

The silica then acts as a permeable armour, according to Michael Hess at the American Office of Public Affairs.

That means the cell beneath can be used as a catalyst at far greater temperatures than normal.

Heating the silica to around 400C evaporates the protein in the cell, but leaves the silica as a three-dimensional replica of the “formerly living being”, Hess said.

“The difference is that instead of modeling the face, say, of a famous criminal, the hardened silica-based cells display internal mineralized structures with intricate features ranging from nano- to millimeter-length scales.”

The valuable biological material can thus be converted into a reusable fossil, which could have uses in fuel cells, decontamination and sensor technology, as well as commercial manufacturing.

:ead researcher Bryan Kaehr said in a statement that the research distinguishes between a mummy cell and a zombie cell.

“Our zombie cells bridge chemistry and biology to create forms that not only near-perfectly resemble their past selves, but can do future work,” he said, terrifyingly.

WARNING – Graphic Images – Zombie Cosplayers

Cosplayers are a huge community both in the United States and the World.  I myself am a cosplayer, though not very good at it.  I do more writing about science fiction, steampunk, vampires and zombies than I do dressing up.  However, some photos are out there of me in my weak costumes.  The word cosplay means “costume players.”  They are some of the coolest, nicest people around and typically go to events up to once per week.  If you go to conventions, like Phoenix ComicCon, you will see many of them there.  There are many types of cosplay including manga, comic book characters, super heroes, star wars, steampunk, diesel punk, ghostbusters, star trek, and increasingly zombies.  Almost every major event now has a “zombie walk” where people dress up as zombies or zombie hunters for a parade.

Again, with Halloween coming up, here are some zombie cosplayers, half of which I know personally.  WARNING – if you do not like graphic zombie depictions, you should not be reading this…

Zombies to invade San Diego counter-terrorism summit!

More training for the Zombie Apocalypse – A few days ago I revealed the military was training for the zombie apocalypse, now the Counter-Terrorism Summit in San Diego will have a full simulation of the zombie apocalypse while trapped on an island resort.  Your tax dollars at work!  What do they know that we don’t?  Why can’t they just come to Phoenix ComicCon for the Zombie Walk and train here?  Perhaps the answers are too chilling to know…

reposted from Foxnews.com

When zombies and cops and Halloween – oh my — collide.

That’s the thrust of the so-called “zombie apocalypse” component of next month’s annual Counter-Terrorism Summit in San Diego, hosted by security firm HALO Corp. on a 44-acre island in the city’s Mission Bay section. Brad Barker, president of the California-based organization, said hosting the annual event over the Halloween weekend was too much temptation to resist.

“We’ve decided to throw a whimsical spin on a very well-respected training exercise,” Barker told FoxNews.com. “And in order to have an effective exercise, you have to have a crisis or a threat that makes everyone respond.”

“It’s going to be pretty scary looking.” – Brad Barker, HALO Corp.

In addition to mock terrorism scenarios featuring rural and urban environments, Barker said zombies worthy of Hollywood sets will recreate an emergency that will test how law enforcement officials and first-responders react to crises in real-time while sharing mission critical information.

“They’re going to look like the walking dead,” Barker said of the zombies. “It’s going to be pretty scary looking; this is going to be a real treat.”

The zombies, of course, won’t be real, but Barker said the same techniques, tactics and procedures that state and local authorities will glean from the exercise are very similar to the skills they’ll need when responding to an act of terrorism, natural disaster or pandemic.

“Whatever the catalyst is for a mass casualty event, nobody really cares,” Barker said. “What you’ve got is chaos, mass casualties and a whole lot of confusion. What we’re looking to do is to recreate the chaos.”

The zombie craze received a jolt last year when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention unveiled a public service campaign focusing the need to be prepared for major emergencies. Barker said his company just “couldn’t resist the opportunity” to play off of that.

Scheduled guests at the five-day event, which will run from Oct. 29 through Nov. 2, include Retired Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden, Mexico Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire Romero and Deputy Chief Michael Downing, commanding officer of the LAPD’s counter-terrorism unit.

Other events will include intelligence learned from attacks in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the 2008 bombing in Mumbai. But Barker said he expects the zombie recreation to leave attendees speechless.

“It’s going to be a significant event for us,” Barker said. “We’re just having a little bit of fun.”

US Military Training For Zombie Apocalypse

There are several Zombie Apocalypse Training Groups that have sprung up across the United States.  At first seen by many as cosplayers, survivalists or even kooks, they are now being employed by disaster preparedness agencies, cities, the Center for Disease Control and now the US Military.  Although these organizations embarrassingly admit they do not believe in zombies, they do believe that the same preparations will help those who face pandemics, break down of civil services, nuclear explosions, wars, terrorist strikes, earthquakes and other incidents in which public services break down and chaos ensues.  Here is one of the latest articles, reposted from The Huffington Post.  Please click on it as well to help Andy Campbell receive full credit and for more pictures.

Zombie Apocalypse Training: HALO Corp. To Train Military, Law Enforcement On Virus Outbreak

The Huffington Post  |  By  Posted: 09/17/2012 8:55 am Updated: 09/17/2012 5:55 pm

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is ready for a zombie apocalypse. Gun owners got prepared for a zombie apocalypse. Now, the military and law enforcement are getting ready.

And next month, they’ll begin training.

Security firm HALO Corp. announced yesterday that about 1,000 military personnel, police officials, medical experts and federal workers will learn the ins and outs of a zombie apocalypse, as part of an annual counter-terrorism summit , according to the Military Times.

Sure, the lesson is tongue-in-cheek — and only a small part of the summit’s more serious course load — but a zombie-like virus outbreak is a good training scenario. Visitors will learn to deal with a worldwide pandemic, where people become crazy, violent and fearful. Zombies will roam the summit grounds in San Diego, Calif. harassing troops and first-aid teams that will be participating.

Further details are unclear, but the Military Times made sure to note that zombies are not real.

The training comes at a time when the term “zombie apocalypse” is so viral that several branches of government have released statements on the matter. Earlier this month, the Department of Homeland Security reported that “the zombies are coming” as part of a hilarious bid to get citizens to prepare for a real disaster.

The CDC has released similar statements using zombies as a playful guise to get the public prepared for actual disasters. To assure that no one’s confused by these announcements, CDC told The Huffington Post that zombies are not real.

Zombie Apocalypse Protection Items

People across the world are preparing for the zombie apocalypse.  It might not be zombies, it might be world economic collapse, nuclear post holocaust, or pandemic disease, but it is basically protecting yourself from the infected and from your fellow humans who go bonkers when things fall apart.  Here are some of my favorites:
