Harbaugh versus Harbaugh

I am not a huge fan of sports, and so this will be a rare sports post from me.  I just wanted to post a shout out to two brothers who will be facing each other in the Super Bowl as rival head coaches.  How cool is that?  Congratulations to the Harbaugh family.

Super Bowl XLVII: Harbaugh vs. Harbaugh

Oh, those Harboys. Good Lord, they must have been a handful.

You may have read something about this, but the Harbaugh brothers, John and Jim, have managed to coach their respective teams to Super Bowl XLVII. Separated by only 15 months, their dad, Jack, says they were more like twins than brothers. When they’d fight, Jack would draw a line down their room and tell them not to cross it. Which, of course, they did immediately.

And now they get to cross the line on the biggest sports stage in the country.

John, the Baltimore Ravens’ coach, is the older, more even-tempered brother, the one with the twinkle in his eye rather than the 100-yard stare. He worked his way up to the Ravens’ job after a career as a Philadelphia Eagles’ assistant.

“I don’t know if we had a dream this big,” Harbaugh said. “We had a few dreams, we had a few fights. We had a few arguments, just like all brothers. … We will try to stay out of that business. We’ll let the two teams duke it out as much as possible.

jim1“I couldn’t be more proud of Jim. Watching that team play, they do reflect his personality.”

That team would be the San Francisco 49ers. Jim Harbaugh came to them after a successful career as the Stanford coach, which came after a long career as an NFL quarterback. Jim is the fiery one, the one who freaked out over a rejected challenge in the NFC championship game, the one who got into a postgame fracas with Detroit Lions Coach Jim Schwartz over the gentlemanly postgame handshake.

Because Jim’s team played first Sunday, all he could say was “I want to thank my parents, Jack and Jackie Harbaugh, and go Ravens.”

With his brother on a plane back to San Francisco after the Ravens’ win, It fell to John to be the spokesman for the Har Bowl. Or the Bro Bowl. Whatever. Neither would probably be headed to New Orleans without having made a bold late-season decision. John Harbaugh fired Cam Cameron and named Jim Caldwell offensive coordinator; Jim Harbaugh benched Alex Smith and named Colin Kaepernick the starting quarterback. In that regard, they are alike.

“I’d like to think that our teams are similar,” John Harbaugh said. “I’d like to think that when you look at those two teams you’re looking at mirror images of two football teams. I’d like to think that. It’s going to be a great game and he’s a great football coach.”

The Harbaughs have accomplished a sibling matchup, one that has eluded the Mannings. A former coach, Jack Harbaugh advised the boys before last week’s games: Get ahead. Stay ahead. On Sunday, he and his wife followed the same routine they did last year, when both boys lost in the championship games. They watched, just the two of them, on their basement TV in Mequon, Wis.

“We share our misery with no one but ourselves,” Jack Harbaugh told the San Francisco Chronicle.

He declined to say whether he offers specifics on just how to get ahead and stay ahead. “That is a key part of that, but I have no definitive answers along those lines,” Jack Harbaugh said. “I’ve allowed them, with the wisdom and knowledge that they have of this great game, to come upon that themselves.”

Starting Sunday night, though, he and Jackie became Switzerland as the Harboys prepare to duke it out and their storyline swallows Super Bowl XLVII. The Harbaugh hype may get to be a bit much, even though the brothers faced each other on Thanksgiving Day 2011. (The Ravens won, 16-6, in Baltimore.)

“You know what? I agree with you,” Harbaugh laughed when asked if he could stomach the hype. ”Let’s just cut that right now, you know what I mean? Can we all agree? Let’s just forget about that. We did that last year. It was fine. It got old last year, right? Did it not?”

Maybe. But on Sunday night, as John’s team took the field and Jim’s boarded a plane for the flight back to San Francisco, it was pretty cool to watch it unfold. Tom Crean, the Indiana basketball coach who is married to the coaches’ sister Joani, tweeted about it:

“We can’t put into words what it means to see John and Jim achieve this incredible milestone. We talked to Jim before his team plane left. All he wanted to know was how was John doing. How were they playing? One incredible family who puts the care, well-being and love for each other at the forefront like most families do. Again, we are very proud of them. Going to be exciting to watch it unfold.”

Update on Fox – Swift

Today’s news on Michael J. Fox a 51 year old man who insulted a 22 year girl over her love life publicly (Taylor Swift) apparently apologized.  I have a son 25 and a daughter 28, and I know first hand that young people date often until they find the right person.  If I was Taylor Swift’s dad, and she is 22, beautiful, smart, and rich, I would advise her to be even more careful of who she stays with than she is now.  Even with the apology, having someone aged 51 dissing a 22 year old for not settling down with one person is terrible.  I can only hazard to guess how Michael J. Fox acted as a child star at age 22.  I doubt he was even as close to being normal and stable as Taylor Swift.  It is good he apologized, and just like when her award was yanked out of her hands, Taylor Swift stayed positive.  But why should she have to?  Why don’t people leave her alone?

Report: Taylor Swift touchy over love life jokes, accepts Michael J. Fox’s apology

Chart-topping albums and wheelbarrow-fulls of awards were once what Taylor Swift was best know for.

Not anymore.

After dating over the past four years a reported 13 guys, all of whom were famous or from famous families, and famously writing songs about several of them, the 23-year-old has become the subject of several unkind jokes.

And apparently it’s taking its toll.

“[N]ow she’s the butt of jokes on Saturday Night Live, in the tabloids and on the late night shows,” an insider told RadarOnline. “She laughed it off, but the jokes made about her at the Golden Globes got under her skin.”

It looks like she might be doing something to stop the onslaught.

Following the Golden Globes joke, in which host Tina Fey jokingly warned Swift to stay away from Michael J. Fox’s handsome young son, Fox himself joined the fray, offering when asked: “Swift writes songs about everybody she goes out with, right? What a way to build a career. I wouldn’t even know who she was.”

Apparently the remark, even though it was said at least partially in jest, hit home, as Swift herself felt the need to let fans know that Fox had in fact apologized to her.

“Hey everybody, Michael J. Fox got in touch with me today and we are good,” Swift tweeted. “Thank you for having my back.”

According to RadarOnline’s source, the negative attention may end up having a positive outcome.

“She really wants to make an effort to slow down and not jump from boyfriend to boyfriend,” said the pal. “In a weird way all the negative press has really opened her eyes and will be good for her!”

Michael J. Fox disses Taylor Swift

I like Michael J. Fox, but he is totally off base here.  Taylor Swift is beautiful, talented, smart and successful.  My son is in a great relationship right now and hopefully things will go well, but if he were unattached, I would let him date Taylor Swift in a heartbeat.  I wish rock girls would take a cue from country singer girls and stay relatively wholesome.  Miley Cyrus aside…  Taylor Swift gets all this heat for musical boyfriends…  Earth to Michael J. Fox – 22 year old girls date a lot of different guys.  They are fresh out of school, adults for the first time, in high demand, and don’t know what they want.  Give her a break.  Singers write about their relationships and break-ups?  Oh my God, she might be the first one to do that!  (heavy sarcasm added).  Lastly, you might not know who she is Michael J. Fox, but I bet in a poll of people, a lot more know her than know who you are…  She probably is getting close or passed you in earnings too at just age 22.  Perhaps jealousy is involved?

Michael J. Fox: Taylor Swift is never, ever, ever dating my son

Published January 18, 2013 TVGuide

The lovely and talented Taylor Swift.

It’s sometimes hard to believe that the country cutie is only 22.

Michael J. Fox does not want his son Sam to be Taylor Swift‘s next target.

On Sunday’s Golden Globes, co-host Tina Fey cautioned the serial dater to stay away from Sam, who was Mr. Golden Globe. “She needs some time to learn about herself,” Fey quipped.

Vulture later caught up with the “Family Ties” alum who admitted, “I don’t keep up with it all, but Taylor Swift writes songs about everybody she goes out with, right? What a way to build a career.”

Fox added that if Sam brought her home, “I wouldn’t even know who she was.” That is, until he hears her next breakup tune: “‘Sam, You Piece of Sh–.’ Oh … that was the girl you brought home!”

Release the Kraken!

‘Kraken’ caught on film at last

The elusive giant squid, which can grow to a monstrous 26 feet in length and is likely the source of the Nordic legend of the kraken, has been captured on film at last.

The creature spends its days trawling the depths of the Pacific Ocean, at a depth where there is little oxygen or light and crushing pressure from the immense weight of the water above. It was spied by Japan’s National Science Museum, working in tandem with Japanese broadcaster NHK and the Discovery Channel, according to AFP.

‘It was shining and so beautiful.’

– Museum researcher Tsunemi Kubodera

“It was shining and so beautiful,” museum researcher Tsunemi Kubodera told AFP. “I was so thrilled when I saw it first hand, but I was confident we would because we rigorously researched the areas we might find it, based on past data.”

The immense creature, which has razor-toothed suckers and eyes the size of dinner plates, has been the subject of fables and fairy tales since ancient times. The Norse legend of the sea monster and the Scylla from Greek mythology might have derived from the giant squid.

This is the first recorded footage of the giant squid in its natural habitat, squid specialist Kudobera said. He also filmed what he says was the first live video footage of a giant squid in 2006, but only from his boat after it was hooked and brought up to the surface.

“Researchers around the world have tried to film giant squid in their natural habitats, but all attempts were in vain before,” Kubodera said.

The squid was spotted at a depth of around 2,000 feet using a submersible in July, about 10 miles east of Chichi island in the north Pacific Ocean.

“With this footage we hope to discover more about the life of the species,” he told AFP, adding that he planned to publish his findings soon.

Discovery Channel will air the footage in the special “Monster Squid: The Giant Is Real,” on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 10PM EST.

“Our crew came face-to-face with the giant squid, and it’s the ideal season finale for our ‘Curiousity’ series that stirs the imagination of our audience, bravely asking questions and fearlessly seeking answers. This latest production, four years in the making, is a world-first achievement for television, and I’m excited to share it,” said Eileen O’Neill, group president of Discovery and TLC Networks.
